Our part of Cornwall
offers some stunning countryside, and some beautiful
walks from which to enjoy it. Lydford Gorge, although
technically in Devon, is only half an hours drive away.
Over the years we have discovered some lovely walks, but
we have also been told of lots more that we haven't yet
had a chance to explore. Most people think of Cornwall
as beaches and ice creams, but the climate has
created a lush, diverse, tapestry of plant life.
Whether you want to walk through the lanes and footpaths
locally after tea, or explore further afield, Rose
cottage provides a perfect base. Within easy reach you
can enjoy seaside walks, riverside walks, woodland
walks; whatever the season or mood, our part of Cornwall
can fulfil your needs. Among local walks are Siblyback
reservoir. Take a walk ar ound
the peaceful reservoir and take in the fresh air and
nature. Rose cottage is located on the fringe of the
beautiful Tamar Valley, home of some spectacular scenery
and riverside walks. If you prefer more rugged beauty,
perhaps Dartmoor or Bodmin moor are more your cup of
tea. Rose cottage lies at the foot of Caradon Hill from
where
you can enjoy panoramic views of the whole area. Just
beyond, Caradon Hill marks the start of Bodmin Moor from
where the countryside can be enjoyed on a grander scale.
Standing stone circles and ancient sites lend a mystical
air to the history of the landscape and the remains of
mine workings remind you of a more recent past. |
Since moving to Cornwall we have
spent some time exploring the countryside and finding new places to
visit, but we have
some
firm favourites. Denham Bridge provides a great riverside walk but also
some forestry tracks. One of the great thing for us is a good walk
followed perhaps with a pint in one of the great country pubs which are
dotted around. Brentor church and Lydford Gorge are both situated in
Devon but only about half an hours drive, and are ideally located for
the castle at Lydford. The granite way, part of the cyclepath network
can also be joined at Lydford. If cycling is your thing, or if you
just want a go with the kids, The Camel Trail is a great day out.
Starting on Bodmin moor (if your keen) this cyclepath built on the old
railway line takes you through Wadebridge to Padstow through woodland
and open countryside, beside the River Camel. If the kids are too small
you can hire bike trailers, and with loads of bike parking at all stops,
it is easy to sight see, do some shopping or have lunch perhaps at o ne
of the great venues in Padstow. This is a great favourite with our
friend who come to stay, especially those who are fans of Rick Stein's
restaurant in Padstow. Now, this isn't supposed to be a walking guide to
Cornwall so I'd better stop. But I hope we have given you a brief
glimmer of what's in store in our part of the world
